MS-077: Gladys Kennedy World War II Letters

This collection of correspondence contains letters from all fronts and from many of Gladys’ “sweethearts.” It appears that she shipped her address out in the parts she made at the Depot and would get responses from some of the soldiers and sailors. Some of the letters are from soldiers and sailors abroad from her hometown of York Springs, Pennsylvania. Collection includes paperwork from a raise received by Kennedy in 1944.https://cupola.gettysburg.edu/findingaidsall/1146/thumbnail.jp

Ternary cluster decay within the liquid drop model

    Get PDF
Longitudinal ternary and binary fission barriers of 36^{36}Ar, 56^{56}Ni and 252^{252}Cf nuclei have been determined within a rotational liquid drop model taking into account the nuclear proximity energy. For the light nuclei the heights of the ternary fission barriers become competitive with the binary ones at high angular momenta since the maximum lies at an outer position and has a much higher moment of inertia.Comment: Talk presented at the 9th International Conference on Clustering Aspects of Nuclear Structure and Dynamics (CLUSTERS'07

Coefficients and terms of the liquid drop model and mass formula

    Get PDF
The coefficients of different combinations of terms of the liquid drop model have been determined by a least square fitting procedure to the experimental atomic masses. The nuclear masses can also be reproduced using a Coulomb radius taking into account the increase of the ratio R_0/A1/3R\_0/A^{1/3} with increasing mass, the fitted surface energy coefficient remaining around 18 MeV

Elastic metamaterials with simultaneously negative effective shear modulus and mass density

We propose a type of elastic metamaterial comprising fluid-solid composite inclusions which can possess negative shear modulus and negative mass density over a large frequency region. Such a solid metamaterial has a unique elastic property that only transverse waves can propagate with a negative dispersion while longitudinal waves are forbidden. This leads to many interesting phenomena such as negative refraction, which is demonstrated by using a wedge sample, and a significant amount of mode conversion from transverse waves to longitudinal waves that cannot occur on the interface of two natural solids

Probing viscoelastic properties of a thin polymer film sheared between a beads layer and quartz crystal resonator

We report measurements of viscoelastic properties of thin polymer films of 10-100 nm at the MHz range. These thin films are confined between a quartz crystal resonator and a millimetric bead layer, producing an increase of both resonance frequency and dissipation of the quartz resonator. The shear modulus and dynamic viscosity of thin films extracted from these measurements are consistent with the bulk values of the polymer. This modified quartz resonator provides an easily realizable and effective tool for probing the rheological properties of thin films at ambient environment.Comment: submitted to ap

Optimization Based Touchscreen Graphical User Interface Design

    Get PDF
Tablets have been increasing in popularity throughout the past couple years and developers are designing their graphical user interfaces (GUIs) with this trend in mind. This thesis attempts to examine how a process can be designed to automatically create a GUI layout for a menu driven interface based on predetermined criteria. The effectiveness of the system along with a qualitative analysis of GUIs was examined through the use of human subjects testing ATM designs on a tablet. A three-way ANOVA was designed to see if Gender, the type of Form, or if the order they did their testing was a significant factor in how fast a subject was able to complete certain tasks and what they thought of each of these forms. While these results were not able to prove which form could be completed the fastest because of an interaction between blocking and forms, the subject’s ratings were able to demonstrate their high preference towards a system that was more simplified. They felt that a simpler designed interface is more aesthetic and usable. The subjects also had a higher sense of satisfaction while using a simple form. This thesis provides background for future research in designing a process that can automatically determine the layout of a menu driven system
